2023 is the year the gaming industry is betting on, after the last three years were ‘consumed’ by the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic disrupted the development of games and a number of them, including some big ones, were delayed like Starfield and the Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Now, 2023 is here and so is the timeline for some of the big launches.
We get straight to the point and here are some of the key games that are coming to PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch this year.
Fire Emblem Engage – Switch
Fire Emblem Engage has arrived on Switch and this is the first big launch of 2023. Engage is a sequel to the Three Houses (2019). Three Houses was critically acclaimed and the expectations are similar from Engage.
Forspoken – PS5, PC
Square Enix has come up with a new game Forspoken in an era full of sequels and spinoffs. The game is being launched on January 24 (today) and its demo had received both applause and criticism. The game is about New York resident Frey Holland who enters the fantasy world of Athia. The game has been designed by Final Fantasy veterans.
Hogwarts Legacy – PS5, Xbox Series X & S, PC
Hogwarts Legacy launches on February 10 and the game has been set in the world of Harry Potter. The role-playing game (RPG) was initially due to be released in 2021 but was first pushed back to 2022 and then 2023. The game will subsequently be released on PS4 and Xbox One on April 4 and on Switch on July 25.
Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty – PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X & S, PC
March 3 is when the new game by Team Ninja will be released. The new IP has been set in the era of the Three Kingdoms from Chinese history, around 220 AD. The game will feature a number of fantastical beasts.
Resident Evil 4 (remake) – PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X & S, PC
Capcom will be releasing the remake of RS4 on March 24 and the game will include the plot of the President’s daughter having to uncover a bioweapon mystery.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Switch
May 12 will see the launch of one of the most-awaited games of this year. The Legend of Zelda franchise is a household name and its 2017 release – Breath of the Wild – has been regarded as one of the best games ever. So, a lot of hope is pinned on this release.
Street Fighter 6 – PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X & S, PC
The latest release in the popular franchise comes to your consoles on June 2. The game will feature improved visuals. Already we know of five new characters with speculation that more could be unveiled in the run-up to the launch of the game. This release would also include single-player adventure mode and commentary (in-game).
Starfield – Xbox Series X & S, PC
Starfield, another biggie, was due to be released last year but was delayed and is now expected to be launched in the first half of this year. Starfield comes from the Bethesda studio, which is the maker of Skyrim and Fallout 4. There are big hopes from this game and it features nearly 1,000 planets to explore.
